I'm looking for information on a David Hamilton, thought to have been born either in York Co., ME or Lanarkshire, Scotland. I believe him to be connected with the Hamilton family, a prominant family in Scotland, but have had trouble finding confirmation. Anyone associated with this family or anyone aware of a website with more information on the Hamiltons, please let me know. David married Annah Jackson (Jaxson) also of Scottish background. Thanks!

David Hamilton
Born: abt. 1628, Of, Westburn, Lanark, Scotland
Christened:
Marriage: 14 July 1662, Rollinsford, Strafford, Dover, New Hampshire to Anna JACKSON
Died: 28 SEP 1692, Kittery, York, Maine

Notes on David Hamilton:
Parents were Andrew Hamilton, 6th of Torrance and Jonet Crocket. Was Slain by Indians at Newichawannock. Was born near Town Of Hamilton, 11 miles SE of Glasgow, Scotland. Son of Andrew Hamilton of Westburn. David Hamilton was taken prisoner either at the battle of Dunbar on 3 sep 1650 or at the battle of Worcester 3 sep 1651, and with others transported to America aboard the John & Sara. 8 nov 1651/52 they sailed from Gravesend, near London, England with the ship master, John Greene. They were bound for charles Towne and then from that point the ship would sail on to Barbadoes. The ship contained ironworkers, planters, house hold stuffe, and other provisions for planters and Scotch prisoners. Also aboard the ship was Richard Jaxson, the father of David's first true love, Annah Jaxson, left behind in Scotland. Later, Richard Jaxson would send for his wife, son and daughter, and Annah would marry David Hamilton. Both the names of David Hamilton and Richard Jaxson are found on the ship's passenger list. After David's landing in Charlestown, not much is known for some years until he appeared in Dover, New Hampshire, arriving there after completing his period of servitude in Massachusetts. Years of servitude were commonly 6, 7 or 8 years. Prior to his marriage to Annah, David acquired rights in a parcel of land, containing twenty acres, in the town of Dover(Rollingsford), New Hampshire on the Newichawannock River between Quamphegan Falls and St. Albans Cove, on which he erected a house. There he and his bride raised their family, and David lived there until his death. He later acquired a legal title to this property by a deed from Benjamin Grant on 7 oct 1669, who acquired the deed from the town of Dover.

There are several books that have information on David Hamilton:

Old Kittery and Her Families by Everette Stackpole. The Hamilton information starts on page 488-to the top of 491

The Hamiltons of Waterborough by Samuel King Hamilton is a lineage from David and has information on David

There are many 'trees' on the internet including on Rootsweb.com

Then there is a Hamilton Surname DNA Project which should be found at this location:

http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/g/a/gah4/HamDNA/H1.html

In this DNA study, there are many groups of Hamiltons. The Hamiltons that descend from David Hamilton are in "Group H". So far, Group H has only 5 participants.

On-line, there are many items about David Hamilton the prisoner of war that sailed on the Sarah and John and came to the America in 1651 or 2.

My husband's Hamilton line descends from David. It goes basically like this:

My Husband/Louis/Sumner/James/ElijahJr/ElijahSr/Gabriel#2/
Gabriel#1/David Hamilton and Annah Jackson

Adding to the information about David Hamilton, I offer the following;
1.Just off the Sligo Road in Rollingsford (Dover) New Hampshire there is a monument erected in 1995 (a replacement for one erected in the 1960's) which commemorates David Hamilton's life and death - killed by Indians, Sept 28, 1691. I have visited the monument and will provide directions if you're interested.
2. Although "conventional wisdom" states that David arrived on the ship John and Sarah, there is some evidence that he actually arrived on the ship Unity, which sailed about the same time. It seems the two passenger lists were combined by one author and from then on, each writer has used that (Hamilitons of Waterborough)as a resource, perpetuating the possible error. Only prisoners aboard the Unity arrived at the Saugus Iron Works.

My Hamilton line is: David (1), Bial (2), Solomon (3), Solomon (4), Solomon (5), Solomon (6)(1830-1919) His daughter, Celeste was my great grandmother. I have information on this branch of the family if interested.

Hi Star
Since I posted that response, I have posted my family tree on Ancestry as "Kenney and McGuire". You will find all the Solomons there. The first Sol was the second son of David, born about1866. My Hamilton line comes from Abial, David's fourth son. They were a prolific lot as you will see. For additional info, try "The Hamiltons of Waterborough", by Samuel King Hamilton and "Old Kittery and Her Families" by Everet Stackpole. If there is anything else I can help with, let me know. What have you found?

I've attempted for years to verify the info on David's Scottish roots, and I can find no evidence that David was from Westburn or was the son of Andrew and brother of Gabriel. The only sources I've found are books written in America, all of which seem to use the same info contained in "The Hamiltons of Waterboro". Source material I've found on Andrew of Westburn list Gabriel and perhaps a John as sons. There is no mention of a David. Does anyone have any links to share that show David's Scottish connections?
