Philip R. Waite

A gathering will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, in his Bend home for Philip R. Waite, who died Aug. 7 of cancer at age 43.

Mr. Waite was born Oct. 22, 1955, in Salem, Mass. He graduated from Reed College in 1981 and received a master's degree in anthropology from State University of New York at Bingamton in 1985. An archaeologist specializing in lithics (stone tools), Native American culture and historical farmsteads, he worked in 22 states, including at Fort Vancouver in 1984, on the main pipeline project from Canada through Central Oregon in the mid-1980s, for the U.S. Forest Service in Burns and for various road construction programs and ammunition plants before his retirement 1996. He moved to Bend in 1998.

Mr. Waite also was the author of more than 20 books on archaeological projects and as a flint knapper (stone tool maker) had displays of examples of aboriginal tools in museums in the United States and Europe. He was a professional drummer for several bands, most recently the Tone Freaks in Texas. In 1998, he married Sharon Grantham.

Survivors include his wife; stepson, Jason Newton of Arlington, Texas; mother, Dorothy of Vero Beach, Fla.; and brother, Geoffrey of Topsfield, Mass.

Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Philip Waite Memorial Fund in care of the Bank of Cascades, P.O. Box 520, Sisters, OR 97759. Arrangements are by Autumn Funerals in Bend.

Philip R. Waite ’80

Philip Waite ’80, of cancer, August 7, 1999, in Bend, Oregon. He received a master’s degree in anthropology from State University of New York, Binghamton in 1985. He worked as an archaeologist in 23 states for several companies, including the Cultural Resource Group of Louis Berger and Associates and Geo-Marine. His specialization was in lithics (stone tools), Native American culture, and historical archaeology. In 1998, he married his wife, Sharon, in Mansfield, Texas, and they moved to the Bend area later that year. He shifted careers from archaeology to music, playing drums in several bands, and working for a company called Multimedia Marketing Group. He was an expert flint knapper and his replicas of aboriginal stone tools are displayed in museums in the United States and Europe. He was a member of the Society of American Archaeology and was the author of several books. Survivors include his wife; his mother; a brother; and a stepson.
