I am a volunteer researcher for the Texas Peace Officers Memorial. On 14 Sept 1924 Angelina County deputies Ben F. SMITH and Grover C. DUNN (who was also a special Texas ranger) were involved in a gun battle that resulted in the death of SMITH. DUNN was tried for murder but I do not know the disposition. I believe SMITH is on 1920 census born in either 1893 or 1895 and survived by his wife and two daughters. I would like to know his place of burial and actual date of birth.

There is a record in the Gipson Funeral Home Records for Ben F Smith, age 40 with a reference to Grover C Dunn. You can order a copy of this record by sending $2.00 and Stamped self addressed envelope to Kurth Memorial Library, Genealogy Dept in Lufkin, Texas with your request. I noted that Mr Smith's occupation to be a barber.

This record shows Smith to to be interred in Pleasant Hill
Cemetery, also called Bennett Cemetery in Trinty County, Texas. If you use the usgenweb, then go to Texas, Trinity
County, Bennett Cemetery there is a Ben Smith listed
10 Aug 1884-15 Sep 1924

I was guessing on B.F. SMITH from census, but I have DUNN's online ranger service records as a special unpaid ranger enlistment, termination and re-enlistment in 1933 as a special ranger. An earlier post reported Ben SMITH in Bennett Cemetery in Trinity Co (B. 10 Aug 1884 - d. 15 Sept 1924). I will do some more research.
