Hi,My husband's family is descended from Pierre du Hamel, changed to Peter Hammell. Landed in Cornwall about 1685. Married a Mary Renfrey. They also had a son Peter Hammell. The name later anglicised again to Hammill. Try Peter's Cornish Ancestry site to take you to the complete list of his descendants.

Hi

Can you tell me which of Pierre du Hamel's children you are descended from. I know of 4 they are: Benet (or Benedict), James, Philip and Peter. I am descended from his son James born in 1704.

Hello, nice of you to reply so quickly.
I am descended from Pierre's son Philip. His son James married Mary Trevora and one of their daughters, Salome, married John Andrewartha. I am descended from their son Elias, who ended up in Cumberland.
I see you are from the Yorkshire branch. Its amazing how far they all travelled.
I found after I posted the message that the sources you quoted are available from the Huguenot Society (£30). I will have to save up and get them! I am hoping there will be enough evidence there for me to start searching French websites.
Best wishes
Janet

Hi Janet

Thanks to you also for the quick reply. I am from the Yorkshire branch, but my great grandfather migrated to Australia, where I was born. Are you willing to share your branch information so I may add it to my tree. Mine isn't on Abcestry.

Hello, Karen, yes, of course, use what you want. I think I am just about up-to-date on my tribal pages site.
http://www1.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=haulfryn&...
Also, I have entered some on Genes Reunited. I'm afraid I don't have a gedcom you can import (though I think Genes Reunited lets you make a direct link).
All the information on the Hammills I have so far is from the Gwinear BTs and Peter's Cornwall site, so I probably don't have much you don't have already. One interesting thing is that the Hammills and the Andrewarthas inter-married 3 times so far as I know. Several Andrewartha branches went to Australia. I was interested to access the Huguenot records, to see which area of France I should concentrate on. I havnt got a specific site in France to check, I'll try googling until I find more.

Janet

Hi, if you Google Peters Cornish Family you can go straight to his website. It is quite detailed. All the info that I have spells Pierre's surname as de Hamel. Our family is descended from Pierre's son Peter Hammell, later changed to Hammill, which is the way we spell it now. My husband's great grandfather James came out to Australia in 1860 or thereabouts.

Would love to know more about the French ancestry, but I have found it to be complicated. I have searched the family de Hamel/de Bellenglise. They go way back to the Vikings who settled at the village of Hamel on the Somme. I can't make the connection between Pierre and that family but there must be; he had the honorific de or du. I think Pierre's naturalization records show that he came from Peronne which is the right area for him.
Regards and good luck. Keep in touch.
Jackie

Hi Jackie

Thanks for the information which will no doubt send me searching further. My branch was from Yorkshire and I had only managed to get back to 1734 and had just presumed we were from there. It was only very recently that I found that they had come from Cornwall and that there was a french connection. My great grandfather also came to Australia and being so far away makes it that bit more difficult to trace the family's history.

Thank you again for your help.
