Erie Canal Worker's

Family tradition tells us that my ggg-gf, John Donovan along with four brother's worked on the widening of the Erie Canal.

We estimate that they immigated from Cork, Ireland <possibly Skibereen> between 1827 to the mid 1840's
period and began to work for the canal upon arrival.

The only clues that we have as to their location in NY is that John Donovan and wife Hannah Sweeney's first son Michael was born in 1844 in Buffalo, NY.

Can anyone advise me as to where I could obtain records for workers in this area for this time frame.

Any information as to where to begin would be most appreciated.

Many Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Penny, there is an Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, NY. They might have records on the workers who built the canal.
