Tvedte (Tweed) family of Norway. Farm? All information welcome!

Hello,

I am a descendant of the Tvedte family of Norway. The branch that I am from was from Valestrand, Norway. My 2nd great grandfather, Tollef Tvedte then emmigrated to North Dakota, United States. The name was later changed to Tweed in the United States.

Is Tvedte a place name? Did it refer to a family farm? Does anyone know the origin of the name? Is this a common name in Norway?

I am interested in knowing more about the Tvedte family and would appreciate any information that you know. I am also more than happy to provide the information that I know to you.

I have a Tvedte - Tweed family tree that was compiled several years ago by a cousin. This tree documents the descendants of the Tvedte family in North Dakota. I am more than happy to look up information in it for you!

I look forward to your posts.

Sincerely,

Travis

The 1900 Norwegian census database indicates four farms by the name of "Tveita" in the Valestrand district. (Part of Sveio in Hordaland, Norway). This farm name and a number of variations can be found all over Norway - so yes, it was fairly common.
The advice and research helps here may be of assistance -

Hello !
My name is Helga Kallevik. I live about 30 minutes by car from Valestrand, Sveio, and my grandmother came from that area. I have local history books from this place and here I find a farm called Tveita.
On this farm I find a person named Tolleiv Johan Vierson Tveita, born 1859. He was married to Dordi Larsdatter Eidsvaag also born 1859.
They had the children: 1)Vilhelm Gustav b. 1881 and 2)Lars Bernhard b.1882.
(Tolleiv also had a son Viking Theodor born 1877 and married to Helga Kristine Hansdatter Valen, at Gramshaug,Sveio Norway).
Tolleiv lived at Tveita farm until 1884, then he took his family with him and emigrated to USA. Before he left he sold to Ellen Marie Olsdatter Steintveit.

The father of Tolleiv was Vier Johanesson Tveita (1811-1869) and Aagota Absalonsdatter (She was earlier married to Tolleiv Taraldson Breistig).
Vier and Aagota only had the child Tolleiv (1859).
Aagota emigrated to America in 1888 (to her son ?).
This is what I can find in Sveio bygdebook.

Sincerely
Helga Kallevik

Hello,

My great grandfather Lars Larsen Tvedte was born and raised in Fitjar, Stord, Norway. He immigrated to America in 1878. He changed his name to Lewis Larson. He lived mostly in Minnesota. His Father was Lars Larsen Tvedte and his Mother was Martha Larsdatter Eskeland both of Stord. I have had some communication with Johanna Tvedten of Stord who's grandfather Johannes was a brother to my great grandfather. I'm hoping you are from this family so I can learn more about Lewis.

I would await your reply. I hope this will get to you as it is now 2008.

Thanks "M" Olson

Hi,

I started this thread a few years ago and was so happy to get an email alert that someone replied! I don't know about a Lewis Larson, but did he settle in the Elbow Lake are of Minnesota? That is where my ancestors ended up. If so, they probably were indeed related. There is an annual family reunion for the Tweeds that I am related to, usually held in Fargo, and there is also a genealogy book / cook book about the branch of the family that was compiled about 20 years ago. It has a bunch of information on the Tweeds. Does any of that ring a bell?

Hi Travis,

No my ggrandfather settled in Lake Park, Becker County, Minnesota in the late 1880's. After his wife died he moved to Hawley, Clay County which borders Becker County. Where he lived and worked before his marriage I don't know. His Obit. said he was in Iowa briefly before moving into Minn. He worked for McCormick Deering in some capacity so I guess he moved around alot. He has been my brick wall for many years. Finally I got lucky and was able to get information of where he came from in Norway - and was able to trace his tree there to his arrival in the US. So now I just have to find out where and what he was doing before landing in Minnesota. So far no record of his Naturalization - so I'll just have to keep looking. As far as I know he had no other family here. But I think he had a cousin or something travel over with him. Ole Olsen Tvete(Tvedte). Was hoping you were from the same branch so I could learn more of his heritage in Norway.

You have a beautiful country. My husband and I enjoyed our visit.

Marguerite

Hello
My name is Vigdis Josang, and I am from Haugesund in Norway (about 30 minute car drive from Tvedte) and I have researched for my ancestors, and I have found that Tollef Tvedte was my grand grand grand grandfather. The Tvedte farm where Tollef came from is now kalled Tveita and is situated in Sveio County, near Valen and Valestrand. Tvedte or Tveita is a very common place or farm name, there are lots of farms i Norway called Tvedte. I have tried to search up the place in Google Earth and found the following coordinates: 59°41'20"N and 5°28'25"E. I hope that is helpful.

Other information about Tollef Tvedte:
Tollef had a son Viking Theodor Tollefson (my grand grand grandfather) outside marriage when he was 18 (before the marriage with Dortha) in Norway.

He left his first son i Norway when he emigrated to US in 1884 by the ship Cunard Linie from Bergen with two three years twin boys and his wife Dortha Eidsvog (Norwegian born name: Dordi Larsdatter.

Viking is my grand grand mothers father, also born outside marriage, and he left my grandmothers mother and married another lady. Of that reason, my mom and my grandmother have not had any knowledge of Viking and his father, until I now, as have done som research. This research has descovered that we may have a lots of relatives both in Norway and US that we have not been aware of. From which of Tollef's children are you related from?

I would be glad if I can get som information about Tollef's children and the family tree in US. My e-mail adress is vigdis.josang@chello.no, if you would like to contact me and supply some information.

Regards
Vigdis Joesang

The Fitjar Tvedte family is probly not the same family as Tollef Tvedte. Tvedte is a very common place or farm name in Norway. And there is also a farm called Tvedte (now called Tveit or Tveita) at Fitjar. Tollef Tvedte came from Tvedte (now called Tveita) at Valestrand / Sveio.
