John was born in North Carolina probably in Wilkes County. He is most likely the son of Thomas Gambrel s/o William Gambrel s/o Henry Gambrel. This has been arrived at by eliminating the sons of Henry who John could have come from. Henry Gambrel of Culpper Co, Va. was definitely the progenitor of our Gambrel clan. John Gambrel was first m. to Nellie but I don't know her last name. By her he fathered 12 children. He later m. Elizabeth Miller and had 2 children by her. In all he had nine sons and four daughters. Two of his sons (Harlan and Daniel King) died in the Civil War. John died in what was then Harlan Co. Ky in 1858

I was most interested in your posting on John Gambrel. My husband is descended from William Gambrel who married Winnifred Elkins of N.C., left S.C. c1804 (was not in 1790 census for S.C., was in 1800, was not in 1810
William and Winnifred left S.C. to move to Kentucky (Muhlenberg Co) and a few years later moved to Indiana(Posey County). Would like to hear from you.

John Gambrel b. 1781 had a brother William, who was living in Kentucky in 1860 with John's son Thomas Gordon Gambrel but it was in eastern Kentucky. There are a lot of John and William Gambrels, I believe all of the Gambrels are from Henry Gambrel of Culpepper Co, Va.

I have been trying to connect my Gambrel family from central Indiana back to the Carolinas.
My parents retired in Cen Ill, where other Gambrels have settled.
About 20 yrs ago I read a very brief biography of a Thompson Gambrel who was reported to have been a Colonel during the Civil War and Later a Judge in Clinton Ill.
I found a Thompson P buried in Waynesville, Ill but he would have been too old to be in the civil war.
He was born in Muhlenburg Co Ky and married in Gibson Co Ind. I have often thought I might find a cross-link between the 2 families.
Even if threre is no connection, I have often wondered about a Colonel and a Judge I can't find.
Do you have any info on this one?

Hi! So nice to hear from a fellow researcher on the same wave length as I. Thompson P. Gambrel was the son of William Gambrel who came from South Carolina to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. William(born c1774)was married to Winnifred Elkins of N.C. They came to S.C. before 1800, as he his shown in the 1800 Census for Anderson County, S.C. However, in the 1810 census he has disappeared. They had two children before they left for Kentucky. After a few years in Kty. they moved to Posey County,Indiana. Thompson Prettyman Gambrel married Elizabeth Roberts in Indiana. When William died, Thompson's mother married Elizabeth's father, and after he died, they moved to Waynesville area, ;Ill. the 1850 census shows a Winnie Roberts, born N.C. Thompson's middle name (Prettyman) is a Marvel family name. Prettyman Marvel was from the East Coast, and the Marvels, Gambrels, and Barrs travelled together, and intermarried. Thompson had a son, Elisha, and Elisha is my husband's g-grandfather. I could never find any war records on Thompson, and no pension list, although according to the Marvel history, he used to dress up in his uniform on patriotic occasions. Thompson P. and wife Elizabeth had 5 children - Maria, William, James, Mary-Ann, Elisha and Sarah. After his wife died, Thompson P. married the widow of Prettyman Marvel Jr. and settled in Waynesville.
