This is my first post ever looking for family history. I am doing a photo album for my mom and my aunt had a detailed family tree on both sets of parents. This got me to thinking about my father's side of the family. The furthest I can go back is my Grandfather, who was Frederick Louis Augst, Sr. He died around 1951 and all I know is what my grandmother and father told me (who died in 1985). I know they said that my paternal great grandparents were from the Alsace Lorraine (sp?) territory of France. I guess my Frederick and your Frederic are from a different branch of the tree. Do you have any suggestions of how I can get any more details. Thank you.

My grandfather died back in 1951. I think he was born around 1883. He was 15 years older than my grandmother. I've never known of a birth certificate for him. I don't think they kept such records back then. My grandmother had a lot of this information in her head. It's sad to think you wait until the info sources die to start trying to find this stuff out! Thanks for your suggestions.

In baptismal record for Johann Wilhelm Thilgen, b. 26 Jan 1733 in Niedermertzig, LUX, is listed sponsor Johann Wilhelm Augst "primissarius" at Oberfeulen. (Thilgens -- who earlier were known as Leyden or Leyder -- are part of my paternal family tree.)

Good evening! I just sent an email to one of the Augst searchers and then I realized I should have posted it instead.
I have a Caroline Augst nee Grussemer in the extended family tree. She married an Augst but I don't know his first name.
Her Aunt Sophia Grussemer married my Grandfather's brother, Conrad Frederick Julg/Iulg.
Caroline Augst was from Wissembourg, France (northern Alsace). I have a small bit of her writing in German on the back of a post card sent from Wissembourg on February 11, 1932. She is sending birthday greetings to her Uncle Conrad in New York state. She also sends greetings from her parents and siblings.
She does not mention her children or husband so I'm guessing she might be in her early 20's and perhaps does not have children of her own yet.
If you haven't already searched phone books I'll be happy to tell you that there are 3 Augst's living in Strasbourg, France right now.
Hope this is some help.

Hi Chris Augst,
My grandfather is Conrad Julg and with him as a boy I visited the farm of Frederick Julg [here name was Iulg] along the canal in New York state. Conrad came to USA in 1891.

I have 4 post cards from Conrad sent from Wissembourg, one in 1932. One is from Caroline, another from Jeanne Schilling."Best wishes and blessings from your niece Caroline Augst nee Grussemer. This is my home town. Many greetings from my parents and siblings. All are well."

I know Conrad sent many letters to Alsace and Germany.

I am searching for the parents of both Conrad Julg and Sophia Grussemer.

This is my very first time on a message board so please send me an e-mail. It was a shock to see these names and yours was the only listing for Grussemer!

My husband's grandfather, George Augst, born Jan. 1866, immigrated to the US in 1883 and married Mary Jurgens in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 16, 1886. He died in Cincinnati on July 15, 1927. The 1900 Ohio census says he was born in Germany. The 1920 Ohio census says his birthplace was France. I know the Alsace region belonged to both at one time or another. His death certificate states that his father's name was also George Augst and does not list his mother's name. Hoping someone else has George in their family tree.

I was just fooling around with my maiden name and your message popped up. I was stunned to say the least.

My Grandfather, Fred Augst, Sr. was from a small town outside of Strassborg, France. He came to the U.S. in the early 1900's, married Lehne Martz June 8,1907. They settled in French Village, Illinois, outside of St. Louis, MO.

About 40 years ago, when my husband was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, we took a day trip to the village outside of Strassborg to meet my Uncle Karl Augst, my grandfather Fred's brother. At that time, he was elderly. We met some of his relatives as well.

Please let me know if we're of one and the same!
