Nancy Nolan, nee, Sybenga, passed away April 17, 2003 after a brief illness. Mrs. Nolan 91st birthday would have occurred on April 30th. Her parents, Johan and Anna Sybenga, emigrated from Holland via Canada in the first decade of the 20th century. She was born in San Francisco, California in 1912, but grew up in Fairfax, Marin County. She graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing and had a full career caring for others as a Registered Nurse. She raised two boys and was a wife to James Francis Nolan, a veteran of WWII and the Korean War and who predeceased her by three months. Beside a nursing career, mother of two, a spouse, and housewife, Nancy found time to engage in support to the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) as a member of the ladies auxiliary. The FRA is a service organization working to improve the quality of life for our career U.S. Navy service men and women and their families. Over the past 50 years, she held many offices within this organization including National President. As the national president, she worked to fund a retirement home for widows of sailors, marines, and coast guard. At the time of her passing, she was acting President of the LAFRA, Unit 200 here in Albuquerque. A younger sister Cora Tarbox, Wiscasset, Maine, two sons John Nolan of San Diego, CA and George Nolan of Albuquerque, three granddaughters, and four great grandchildern survive Mrs. Nolan. A private, family only, ceremony will be held in San Francisco later in the month where her ashes, along with those of her husband, will be scattered beyond the Golden Gate.
