This pedigree is based on Burke's irish Landed Gentry, 1959. Among the families prominent members was General Sir Phineas Riall, British commander during the War of 1812. Should anyone have further information on anyone mentioned below, please post a reply.

I. The Rialls of Ballyorney descend from Phineas Riall of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, who was born on New Year’s Day 1659 and died in 1709. State of Clonmel at this time? In 1650 the former Butler stronghold, commanded by Hugh Dubh O’Neill, resisted a strong siege by Cromwell resulting in 2000 of Cromwell’s men dead before honourable terms of surrender were obtained. In 1692, the year of what?, he married Elizabeth, dau of William Vaughan of Clonmel. In 1690, the Jacobite garrison in Clonmel fled on advance of William’s army.

II. Their son William Vaughan Riall was born on 3rd Feb 1699 and founded the Riall Bank in Clonmel in 1753. In 1727 he married Mary (d. 1774),, dau of John Bagwell. He died in 1781, leaving issue two sons and a daughter:

2. Rev. Samuel m. 1770 Elizabeth, sister & co-heir of Col. Lawford Miles of Rochestown. In 1798, their daughter Elizabeth married Dunbar Barton of Rochestown, 6th son of William Barton of Grove, Co. Tipperary.
3. Elizabeth m. 1754 Simon Newport, Waterford, Banker.

Phineas was born 16 April 1737 and married on 19 Nov 1768 to Catherine, 2nd dau of Charles Caldwell of Dublin. He d. 15 May 1797 leaving issue 4 sons and 1 dau:

IV. 1. William Riall of Annerville (1769 – 1843) who m. (4 Jan 1798) Dorothea (d. March 1848), eld dau of Lt Col Henry Bellingham of Castle Bellingham, eld brother of Sir William Bellingham, 1st Bart. They had 3 sons, 3 daus. The 3 sons were: Phineas died unmarried aged 28 in 1827, William was a Cmdr in the RN and Samuel, the youngest, succeeded to Annerville and married Maria, widow of Thomas Quin of Redmondstown and only dau of George Baker of Cahir. The Annerville male line died out when Samuel’s only grandson died of enteric fever in World War One.

3. General Sir Phineas Riall, KCH, Col. 15th Foot, served with distinction in West Indies and Canada. Born 15 Dec 1775. M. 1819 Elizabeth Virgo Scarlett (d. 1869) and dsp 11 Nov 1850. As commander of British forces in the Niagara region during the War of 1812, Sir Phineas found himself - like so many other commanders - out of his depth. He was brave enough - again no surprise - but his military talents were quickly found wanting. Beaten at the battle of Chippewa, Riall retreated and found himself in a follow-up battle at Lundy's Lane. There he was wounded and then captured by the Americans. In 1816, he was made Governor of the West Indies colony of Grenada.
4. Andrew Arthur, b. 24 March 17777, m. (1) 1799 Henrieta, 3rd dau of Lt Col Henry Bellingham (see above) and (2) 1818 Arabella Berkeley. Dsp Aug 1859.
1. Elizabeth, b. 1771, m. 1790 Gen Sir George Cockburn, GCH, of Shanganagh Castle, Bray, Co. Wicklow, son of George Cockburn of Liverpool (anything to Port?) and d. 1846 leaving two sons and four daughters. He died in 1847.

Charles was born 31 Oct 1774 and settled at Heywood, Co. Tipp. On 6 April 1801 he m. Anne (d. 1837), 4th but 2nd surv dau and co-heir of John Roberts of Old Conna Hill, Co. Dublin. It was during this time that Bianconi was Mayor of Clonmel. He d. 15 April 1855 leaving issue:

6. Anne, b. 1816, m. (1) John Murray and had 5 s, 2 d. She m. (2) Richard John Roe and d. 21 Feb 1903 having further issue two daughters.
7. Jane Charlotte m. 12 Dec 1839 Col George John Neresford, RA, 2nd son of Rev Charles Cobbe Beresford and grandson of Rt. Hon. John Beresford, 2nd son of 1st Earl of Tyrone. She d. 1842 leaving 1s, 1 d. He d. 11 Feb 1864.
Phineas was born on 11th May 1803 and educated at TCD (where Emmett’s Rebellion in year of his birth). On 15th July 1834 he married Mary Anne Roe (d. 16 May 1861), dau of John Roe of Rockwell, Co. Tipp. In 1848, Clonmeal was the venue for the trial of Smith-O’Brien, Meagher, MacManus and O’Donoghue. On 11 Jan 1857 he inherited Old Conna Hill in Wicklow from his mother’s sister Martha Roberts. He served as DL and JP for Co. Wicklow and High Sheriff in 1863. He d. 15 Aug 1884, leaving issue:

V. 1. John Lewis Roberts Riall who succeeded to Old Conna Hill, Co. Wicklow, and was DL, JP and HS (1889) for Dublin and JP for Co. Wicklow. He served as Capt in 15th Regt. Born 15th Jan 1838. Educ Cheltenham. M. 16 Feb 1871 Elizabeth Sophia (d. 12 Aug 1915), eld dau of Capt David Beatty of Heathfield, Co. Wexford (anything to Admiral Beatty?) and d. 2 Dec 1930, leaving issue three daughters. On his death, Old Conna passed to his eldest daughter Olave, a spinster. On her death on 30 Jan 1851, the property passed to both the other sisters – Violet Maud (widow of Arthur Whitehead of Linda Vista, Abergavenny, Mon) and Elizabeth Rose (wife of Alan Octavius Whitehead, DL, of Plas Derwen, Abergevenny). The Whiteheads were sons of George Whitehead, JP, of Deighton Grove, Yorkshire. Elizabeth died on 1 Dec 1956, leaving a daughter Elizabeth (b. 1924) who m. Bryan Andrew Marshall, son of Robert Nevins Marshall of Whitegate, Kilkenny, settled in Berkeley House, Lambourn, Berks and had two sons. Violet died on 8th May 1857 by which time Old Conna Hill had been passed over to their cousin Claud (see below).

4. Lt Col William Augustus Riall, RA, DL, JP, succeeded to Heywood, Co. Tipp. Born 25 Aug 1844. M. 27 July 1880 Eleanor Mary (d. 13 Oct 1913), only dau of Sackville Deane Hamilton of Beechmont, Co. Cork and d. 25 Oct 1918 leaving a son, Gerald, who dunm aged 58 in Aug 1944, and three daus, Marion, Helen (m. Major Hubert Parker) and Aileen.
5. Major Richard Villiers Sankey Riall, 15th regt, b. 30 Aug 1846, m. 4 Jan 1887 Lily (d. 29 March 1835), 3rd dau of Jonathan S. Harrison of Brandesburton Hall, East Yorks, and dsp 30 Oct 1929. (day of Wall Street Crash?).
1. Elizabeth b. Christmas Day 1835, m. 17 Sept 1873 Rev. Ralph Richard Albert Meredith, MA, and d. 31 Aug 1927, leaving 2s, 1d. He d. 20 Dec 1878.
2. Edith May Marion, b. 17 May 1849, m. 16 Oct 1872 Lt Col Delves Broughton, E Yorks Regt, eld son of Rev Delves Broughton of Broughton Hall, 2nd son of Rev Sir Henry Delves Broughton, 8th Bart, and d. 9 Feb 1916, leaving issue. He d. 4 Nov 1929.
The third son, Commander Arthur George Roberts Riall, RN, of Chantilly, Shankhill, Co. Dublin, was born on 9th Feb 1842. He served with distinction on Chinese Expedition of 1867. On 26 Nov 1874 (same day as TK & Lady Anne?) he m. Selina Florinda (d. 4 Jan 1930), eld dau of William Truelock Bookey of Derrybawn, Co. Wicklow. He d. 6 July 1915, leaving issue:

3. Major Malcolm Brown Bookey, OBE (1919), W Yorks Regt, served S. Africa (despatches) and WWI (wounded). Born 22 July 1879 and educ Charterhouse and RMC Sandhurst. M. 22 July 1910 Sydney Maude, only surv dau of Capt Robert Lefroy, JP. They settled at Merley Moor, Broadstone, Dorset. His only son C/Capt Arthur Bookey Riall, RAF Regt, formerly E. Yorks Regt, served in WW2 (wounded, despatches) and received the OBE (1953) and CBE (1956). He was born 7th Dec 1911 and educ Charterhouse and RMC Snadhurst. On 27 Jan 1945 he m. Penelope, dau of Col. James Wallace, Highland LI, by whom he had one son Noel Patrick, b. 24 Dec 1945. He divorced Penelope in 1950 and married again on 1st Dec that year Pamela Patricia, dau of Sydney Hewitt of Luton, Beds. By this second marriage he had further issue four sons – Nicholas (Sept 1951), Richard (March 1953), James (July 1854) and Robin (March 1956). Arthur had two sisters – Ruth (b. 13 Feb 1914) and Barbara (b. Oct 1916, m. Feb 1954 Clifford William Maginess of High Park, Broadstone, Dorset, son of Samuel Maginess of Sandfield Park, West Derby, Liverpool, and had a daughter Patricia in Jan 1955.
4. Lt Col Bertram Charles Riall, Leinster Regt, b. 13 Feb 1881, educ Cheltenham & Sandhurst, m. 1 Oct 1913 Eva Josephine, eld dau of William Kennedy Marshall, DL, JP, of Baronne Court, Birr, Co. Offaly. He died on 10 Oct 1953. His eldest son, Major Anthony Claud Riall, RA, born 1914, educ Charterhouse & Woolwich, served in WW2 and was made Officer of Legion of Merit (USA) in 1944 and Croix de Guerre France 1944. He married Sylvia Lucy Robertson, dau of Col. Roger Archibald Reith of Jersey, settled at The Old Rectory, Chilton, Candover, Alresford, Hants, and had a daughter Georgina born 11 April 1942. The second son Gilbet Riall was born in Nov 1917, educ at Charterhouse and, on 30 June 1947, m. Shelagh Mary, dau of Lt Col Herbert Armstrong Williams, DSO, IMS, of Mount Auburn, Killiney, Co. Dublin.
5. Edith Mabel b. 20 June 1877, dunm 9 Feb 1936.
6. Hilda Daphne, b. 28 March 1883, dunm 14 May 1956.

The eldest son, Lt Col Claud Phineas Bookey Riall of Old Conna Hill, Bray, and Ballyorney House, Enniskerry, served with E Yorks Regt (like most of family) in WWI (despatches). He was born on 2nd March 1876and educ at Charterhouse and TCD. On 9 Nov 1915 he m. Ida Margaret Clare (d. 14 June 1954), eld dau of Col. Charles Henry Dudley Ryder, CB, CIE, Dso,a kinsman of the Earl of Harrowby. He d. 10 June 1952, leaving:

Major Patrick Dudley Erskine Riall, RA, of Ballyorney, served WW2, MFH, b. 14 Jan 1921, educ Charterhouse, m. 1 July 1953 Jane Priscilla, elder dau of Brigadier Gilbert Coghlan Wells, MC, TD, of Duffield, Derbyshire, with who he had two daughters – Selina Margaret (b. 7 Oct 1955) and Caroline Amanda (b. 1 May 1957).
2. Rosemary Sophia, b. 12 May 1918, m. 10 Feb 1943 John Raymond Brown, only son of John Henry Brown of Southport, Liverpool, Lancs, and settled at Underwood Cottage, Binfield, Berks. They had two sons – John Michael Riall Brown (1 April 1950) and Mark Patrick Collingham Brown (22 feb 1952).
