One problem you face is that a death record from 1949 likely would be considered private under the Swiss privacy laws. In that case, the official record (civil registration) would be under the jurisdiction of the local or cantonal civil registration bureaucracy, available only to direct descendants, and you would have to know which office to ask.
The second problem is to figure out what canton you should be searching! Swiss research will almost always be done at the cantonal or local level.
I think your best bet is still to look for some official record in Ireland. Do you believe the body was returned to Ireland for burial? That would involve some formalities on both sides. In particular, I would think the Swiss consulate in Ireland would have been involved in the arrangements, and if so, there might be a mention in consular records that are probably in the Swiss Federal archives in Bern. Also, there might have been a mention in the Dublin newspapers.
Best of luck in your search!
