MRS. HENDRYX CELEBRATES 98TH BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY
Mrs. Rose "Grandma" Hendryx of Husum celebrated her 98th birthday anniversary on December 26th by entertaining several relatives and friends.
"Grandma" came across the plains in a covered wagon and landed in this vicinity in September, 1885, where she has resided since. "Grandma" is the oldest pioneer in Klickitat county and 'tis said that as far as working is concerned, there are many younger folks who display envy when around the elderly lady.
Mrs. Hendryx resides alone on a farm. She milks her cows, cares for her chickens, raises her own pigs, and cultivates a sizable garden. Many times, neighbors may see the old lady carrying a heavy sack of corn or other grain up the steep incline to her cow or chickens or see her digging her potatoes or hoeing in her garden.
Mrs. Hendryx was the recipient of many birthday greeting cards, by mail, airmail and in person. One came to "Grandma" from California. A neighbor, Mrs. Crawford, presented the near-centenarian with a beautiful birthday cake decorated with candles. Mrs. Kerbish, another neighbor, took in a German tea cake and some delicious home made candy during the day.
During the day many friends dropped in to some greet her.
Those present for the dinner were her daughter, Mrs. Frances Locke of Bingen; her son, Mage Hendryx; grandchildren present where Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Knapp and Russell Hendryx of Husum, Mrs. Rose Coffield of Bingen; great-grand children present were Mr. and Mrs. Glen Park and Derrel Coffield of Bingen; a nephew, Monroe Locke of Husum.
"Grandma" Hendryx has a great-great-grand child, a girl, Dahlia Lee McEwen. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles McEwen of Goldendale. All present reported an enjoyable time and a fine dinner.
All expressed the joy at being present and expressed the wish to be present in 1935 at the 99th anniversary.
