Josiah Smith was born in the state of Ohio on Feb. 1st, 1857 and died at his home in Mabton on Dec. 24th, 1934, aged 77 years, 10 months and 23 days. At the age of five years, he, with his parents, crossed the plains and settled in Lake county, California. In 1880 the moved to Bickleton and filed on a claim now known as the Jake Hosfelt place. In 1884 they filed on a homestead and timber culture near Bluelight, which he improved and made final proof on. In 1885 he was united in marriage to Tillie Wommack. To this union eight children were born, two of which preceded him to death. In 1904 he moved to Bickleton where he owned and operated the present blacksmith shop. In 1911 he moved to Mabton where he resided until his death.
