Basically, there were TWO John Saffords, both from Ipswich, Mass. I'm assuming that they were related as both moved to Ct. One John was born in 1663, the other in 1673.
The John that married Hannah Newman was the son of Joseph. They moved to Preston, New London, Ct. He died there March 29, 1736 at age 73, thus was born in 1673. He
is buried in the Safford Cemetery. He evidently married twice, the second time to a Deborah, as evidenced by a will he wrote naming her.
Their children were John 1687, Hannah 1691, Sarah, 1694 Mary 1697, Elizabeth 1700 , Margaret1703 , Joseph b 1705, and Gideon 1709.
The John that married Abigail Martin moved to Norwich Ct., fairly close to Preston. He is buried in the Ames Cemetery in Lisbon, Ct. He died 12 Aug 1739, age 66, thus born circa 1673.
Their children were Joseph, b 1704/5, Solomon, 1713, Sarah, 1718, Abigail, 1703, John, 1711.
As to John having 2 or 3 wives, Abigail begin second or third, notice THIS.
She was born circa 1676. She is buried next to the John at the Ames Cemetery. She died age 92, on 20 March 1768.
The two other Johns died in 1736 and 1739. She outlived both of them by many years.
I have supporting evidence to back this up.
My Joseph, son of John, mother ABIGAIL moved to Bennington, Vt. If you are related to Abigail, you are not related to Sarah Low.
You may want to call the cemeteries in question for more info. Remember the AMES cemetery is in Lisbon, the Safford one in Preston.
Also, the Ohio Valley Saffords book contains some of this info. Look at pages 52, 53 (bottom of page), 54, 55, and the Appendix, pg 165, 166.
Also the Vermont Historical Gazetteer Volume 11, under Fairfax, Josiah Safford, pg 177. While there are some errors, you might also want to look at the Sarah Robinson Genealogy. Sometime last year someone printed the whole genealogy on line, I believe with Gen Forum. The Wallbridge Genealogy also states that John died in Norwich, Ct.
Hope this helps some.
I was also under the impression that I came from the Thomas Safford line, but was mistaken. I believe that my ancestor came over in the 1670's and his name was Josiah.
