Hello all- my name is Samantha, and I am of northern California. I heard a few times that our family are of Cherokee descent, but we never really had the opportunity to verify it. As far as I know- the potential Native American heritage is through either the ascendants of Inez "Snook" Isadora J. Edens or the ascendants of her husband, Orvel (also known as Orvil or Orville) Poteet, who is my paternal great-grandfather. I decided to start researching out of genuine curiosity.

Orvel was born either 2-11-1911 or 2-11-1912 in Stilwell, Adair County, Oklahoma- I am not sure about the year because there was no actual birth certificate record- and he died 5-16-2000 in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas. His siblings were Molly (also known as Mollie), Levi, Virgil (or Vigle), and Cordia (or Corda).

Orvel's father was Wilce Oscar Poteet- several name variations show up for him: Wilee Aseur Poteet, Wilce Oscar Peteet / Pateet / Potteet, and Wils O. Polette. Wilce was born 9-22-1881, 1882, or 1883 in Batson, Johnson County, Arkansas and died 4-14-1968 in Paradise, Butte County, California. Wilce was the son of George Washington Poteet and Caroline Tennessee Dake. Wilce married Lucretia R. Wilsie- again, several name variations show up for her as well; she was born in 1886 in Arkansas, and she died in 1958 in Stockton, San Joaquin County, California. Lucretia was the daughter of Hezekiah Wilsie and Lucy Jane Kirk.

Inez "Snook" Isadora J. Edens was born 5-24-1917 in Denning, Franklin County, Arkansas and she died 10-9-2002 in Panama, Le Flore County, Oklahoma. Inez's mother was Alberta May Hollowell (b. 1986-d. 1965), and her father could be William S. Edens (b.1895-d. 1945).

Orvel and Inez's children are Erma Louise "Taincy" (deceased), Lester "Butch," Richard "Spud," (deceased), and Roberta Fay (deceased).

I was told that before Inez passed, she allegedly had handwritten documents detailing information about the potential Native American heritage and after her death, her documents were misplaced or lost. I was also informed that before my father's cousin (Loree Ashcraft ) passed away last year, she was trying to find rolls / census cards.

If you have any additional information that could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. My e-mail is spoteet4@gmail.com.

Thank you!
