Ed, it seems that you're referring to Nieder-Saulheim. In 1969, the villages of Ober-Saulheim and Nieder-Saulheim merged into the town called today simply Saulheim. Until the beginning of the 19th century, this region was part of the Electorate of the Palatinate (in German: Kurpfalz). It then became part of the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt and thus the name Rhine Hessen (in German: Rheinhessen). Following World War II, Rhine Hessen, the southern half of the Prussian Rhine Province and the Bavarian Palatinate (Pfalz) combined to form the new state of Rhineland-Palatinate (in German: Rheinland-Pfalz). The largest cities in Rhine Hessen are Mainz, today the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, and Worms. Saulheim, which has about 6700 people, is located about 12 miles southwest of the city of Mainz.
