Hello Jenny,

I located quite a bit of information that I believe refers to your May, McDonald, and related ancestors. Some of this information you no doubt already have, but some you may not, and so I’ll include everything that I uncovered so that you can determine which records you are most interested in.

For example, I located the church marriage index for Thomas May and Margaret A. McDonald at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Derry. The IFHF is also known as RootsIreland. The index shows that Thomas and Margaret were married in the Waterside Presbyterian Church in 1912. The Waterside Presbyterian Church is located in Derry City.

The index is below:

1 match for the search criteria: May Thomas 1912 Parish: WATERSIDE (PR)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Derry
Surname: May
First Name: Thomas
Spouse's Surname: MacDonald
Spouse's First Name: Margaret A
Father's Surname:
Father's First Name:
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1912

Parish/District: Parish: WATERSIDE (PR)
____

Your information shows that Thomas’s father was Robert May. Presbyterian marriages, like Church of Ireland and Church of England marriages, often include the names of the fathers of the groom and bride, and so I wanted to see if the IFHF search engine accepted Robert as Thomas’s father in a revised index. The search index did accept Robert as his father:

1 match for the search criteria: May Thomas 1912 Parish: WATERSIDE (PR)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Derry
Surname: May
First Name: Thomas
Spouse's Surname: MacDonald

Father's Surname: May
Father's First Name: Robert
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Year: 1912

Parish/District: Parish: WATERSIDE (PR)
____

With Margaret A. McDonald as the primary partner in the marriage index, I then wanted to see if the IFHF search engine accepted John McDonald as her father. Your records show that Margaret was the daughter of John McDonald.

The search engine accepted John as Margaret’s father:

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the marriage index for Thomas and Margaret that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain a transcription of the church marriage record from the IFHF. You’ll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcription. The IFHF website has more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/index.php?id=78

One advantage of ordering records from the IFHF is that as soon as credit card information is processed, the record is sent to your computer, so that you don’t have to wait very long to view it.

The Waterside Presbyterian Church is located in Clooney Terrace, Derry City, near the eastern shore of the River Foyle. The church was built in 1863.

To view a Google Map of Clooney Terrace, Derry City, go to the following link: http://tinyurl.com/puzvk3p

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Clooney Terrace. Clooney Terrace ties into King Street and Glendermott Rd. towards the north, and also connects with Simpsons Brae and Carlin Terrace to the south.

In the upper left corner of the map, just above the Zoom-in/Zoom-out gage, you’ll see a little yellow Peg-man. Grab the Peg-man with your mouse and pointer and drag him to the point where Clooney Street and Simpsons Brae connect, then let go of him. You’ll then be dropped off near the Waterside Presbyterian Church where Thomas May and Margaret A. McDonald were married. You may have to pan the image one way or the other to arrive at the view of the Waterside Presbyterian Church from the road. You’ll also be able to navigate your way up and down Clooney Street.

Next I found the civil registration marriage index for Thomas and Margaret. This index was uncovered at the Ancestry.com website. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1845 when the government recorded Protestant marriages. Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths for all religious denominations commenced in Ireland in 1864. The index shows the marriage of Thomas and Margaret was recorded in the Londonderry Registration District for the September quarter of 1912:

The “FHL Film Number 101262,” in the index above, refers to a Family History Library (Latter Day Saints, or LDS), microfilm number on which a copy of the civil marriage record for Thomas and Margaret can be found. You can order the film from your nearest Family History Center. If you do not have a Family History center nearby, you can order the marriage record from the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. There is also a GRO in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but I believe records are more expensive from that office, as the currency in the North is based on British Pound Sterling, rather than the Euro.

You can order a photocopy of the marriage record from the GRO in Roscommon Town for 4 Euros. For information about ordering civil birth, marriage, and death records, and for application forms, go to the GRO website and links at:

THE CHILDREN OF THOMAS MAY AND MARGARET ADELAID MCDONALD

Jenny, your records show that Thomas and Margaret had three children. These are John Noel McDonald, Flora McDonald May, and Elinor Adelaide. I found the civil birth records for all three children at the IFHF website for County Derry. The indexes show that Flora was born in 1913; Elinor in 1916; and John in 1918. These births were recorded in the Londonderry Urban No. 2 district, which is indicated in the indexes as (RD). The RD stands for Registration District.

Your interest seems to be primarily focused on John Noel McDonald May and so I looked for more information about him. I found two civil registration marriage indexes that may pertain to him, though I can’t be 100 percent sure this is your John Noel. The first index below shows the marriage of four couples, or eight people, recorded in the Drogheda (County Louth) Registration District for the June quarter of 1942. The brides in the index are Caroline Maguire, Kathleen Monaghan, Bridget Kinsella, and Kathleen McMahon. The index doesn’t tell which two people married one another, which means you would have to order John’s marriage record from the GRO in Roscommon Town to find out, if you don’t know the person he married. The index is below:

EARLIER INFORMATION ABOUT THE MAY FAMILY

I next wanted to see if I could locate more information about Thomas May before his 1912 marriage to Margaret Adelaid MacDonald. Your records show he worked as an electrical engineer. To see if I could find more information I looked for Thomas in the 1911 census of Ireland, and believe I found him living in an address of house 1, Grove Place, Londonderry. He is not with his parents however, but residing as a boarder in the household of John and Maria Williams and their children, and other boarders. The census shows that Thomas is employed as an electrical engineer, that he was a Presbyterian, that he was single, and that he was born in County Derry.

The 1911 census transcription below is from the National Archives of Ireland website link at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You can view a copy of the original 1911 census at the National Archives of Ireland link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002836571/

The following 1911 census may refer to Thomas’s widowed father, 72 year old retired school teacher Robert May, living in an address of house 16, Bellury, Garvagh, Londonderry. The census shows that Robert’s religious affiliation is Presbyterian, and that he was born in County Antrim. In the household with him is his 22 year old son James, and 50 year old cousin, Sara Jane McCook. Both James and Sara Jane are shown to be Presbyterians and born in County Derry.

The 1911 census transcription from the National Archives of Ireland follows:

I next looked for Thomas and his family in the 1901 census. I found 62 year old school master Robert May and his 48 year old wife Ellen S. May, and their children in an address of house 12, Bellury, Garvagh, but Thomas is not in the household with them. The census shows that Robert was born in County Antrim and that Ellen, employed as a workmistress, was born in Derry. The children in the household are 20 year old Ellen S, an unemployed school teacher; 16 year old John; 16 year old Ann B, 12 year old James; and 7 year old Samuel. All the children were born in County Derry. The census shows that all the family belonged to the Presbyterian Church:

The following 1901 census enumeration could refer to Thomas, only in this census Thomas’s middle name is James. The census shows that 19 year old Thomas is employed as a chemist’s assistant, and living as a boarder in the household of 80 year old housekeeper Margaret Torrens, in an address of house 33, Union Street, Ballymoney, County Antrim.

Thomas James May is shown to be a Presbyterian and born in County Londonderry. Do you know if your Thomas May’s middle name James? If it was, this enumeration may refer to him:

While at the LDS website looking for information about Robert and Ellen Sarah Starrett May, I came across the death registration index for their son, Hugh. The index shows that Hugh died in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, on 17 September 1939. The index also shows he was 61 and single when he died. His date of birth in Derry, Ireland, is 4 September 1878, which is the same date listed in his birth index above. The index is accompanied by film number 1953626, but I can’t seem to find any information about this film at the online Family History Library Catalog. The marriage record for Samuel Thompson May and Dulcie MacWilliam can be found on LDS microfilm number 1983708, which you can order from the Family History Center.

Going back to the Ancestry.com website I found the English christening record for Dulcie McWilliams, which shows her middle name was actually Lowrie. The record shows that Dulcie was born on December 24, 1889 and baptized in the Holy Trinity Church of England, Aldershot, on February 7, 1890. Her parents are listed as Alexander and Kate McWilliams. Kate’s maiden name isn’t recorded in the baptism. Alexander’s occupation is “Soldier.” The address of the McWilliams family at the time of the christening is 11 Cadogan Place, Queens Road, Aldershot. The name of the clergyman who baptized Dulcie was Henry T. Carell.

A transcription from a copy of the original record is below:

I also found a copy of the original marriage record for Alexander McWilliams and Kate Kerrigan at Ancestry.com’s, “Surrey, England, Marriages, 1754-1937.”

The marriage record shows that Alexander and Kate were married in the Church of England Parish of Aldershot on May 23, 1882. The ages of Alexander and Kate are listed as “full,” Their address at the time of marriage is Aldershot. Alexander’s occupation is listed as “Messman,” which could be a military term for a person working in the dining hall or mess hall. Or it could be that Alexander was a civilian at this time and working in a restaurant. Alexander’s father is listed as Allen McWilliams, farmer.

Kate Kerrigan is listed as a spinster. Her father is James Arthur Kerrigan, employed as a “Chef.” It’s possible that Alexander and Kate met through Kate’s father, who worked as a chef.

The vicar who married Alexander and Kate was Henry I. West. The witnesses to the marriage were William Arthur Bundy, and Fanny Kerigan

Getting back to the May family I uncovered the civil registration district birth indexes for six children of Robert May and Ellen Starrett at the IFHF website. The births of the children were all recorded in the Garvagh, Londonderry Registration District (RD). The names of the children and their years of birth are: Ellen Sarah (1874); Robert (1876); Hugh (1878); Jane (1880); Thomas (1882); and Samuel Thompson May (1893). You saw Samuel’s British Columbia marriage index earlier.

You’ll notice in the indexes that the “exact” spelling for Ellen’s maiden name varies form Starret, Starrat, Starrit, and Starrett. If you access these indexes, you can just spell the name in each index as Starrett if you use the “Standard Surname Index, rather than the “Exact Match,” option. The Standard Surname option will accommodate the various spellings of Starrett.

The indexes follow:

Boveedy, also spelled Bovedy, is located just to the west of the town of Kilrea. To see a Google Map of Bovedy, first go to the map for Kilrea at: http://tinyurl.com/mgzyl55

Once at the map, click on the Directions prompt in the upper left corner of the page, and in the A drop-down box type, “Bovedy, United Kingdom,” and then click on “Get Directions.” The next map shows that Bovedy, by the shortest route, is 5.1 kilometers, or 3.2 miles west of Kilrea. Pan the map so that Bovedy is in the center of your screen, then click on the letter A pointing to Bovedy to generate a “Street-view” image. Click on the image to enlarge it and you’ll be dropped off on the road that passes the Bovedy Presbyterian Church.

THE MCDONALD FAMILY

At this point in the research I wanted to see if I could find Margaret Adelaide McDonald in any records before her 1912 marriage to Thomas May. I found 25 year old Margaret A. McDonald residing in the household of her parents, 71 year old John and 70 year old Mary Ann McDonald in an address of house 51, Carlisle Road, Londonderry. You records show that Margaret’s parents were John McDonald and Mary Ann Curry, and so I believe this 1911 census refers to your McDonald clan, minus Mary Ann’s maiden name of Curry.

The census shows that Margaret is working as a “Teacher of Drawing,” Her father John’s birthplace is listed as Argylshire, Scotland. His occupation is poultry merchant. Mary Ann’s birthplace is Londonderry. The census shows that John and Mary Ann, as of 1911, were married for 45 years, and in that time had 12 children, with 8 children still living. Of those 8 children, 6 are in the household with them. All the children are single. The census shows the children are 44 year old governess Mary; 38 year old Kate; 34 year old Elizabeth; 30 year old John, employed as an iron monger’s assistant; 27 year old George D., employed as a “Draughts Man;” and 25 year old Margaret A. The family are shown to be Presbyterian.

Also in the household is the McDonald’s Catholic servant, 19 year old Minnie Reilly:

You can view a copy of the original 1911 census for the McDonald family at the National Archives link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002835978/

I also found 18 year old Margaret “Adelene” McDonald and her family in the 1901 census living in an address of house 14, Carlisle Road, Londonderry. Including Margaret there are 8 children in the household:

To see where Carlisle Road is situated in Derry on a modern Google Map, go to: http://tinyurl.com/kjw72dr

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Carlisle Road. Left-click on the letter A to generate a “Street-view” image, then click on the image to enlarge it, and you’ll be able to take a virtual tour of Carlisle Road.

If you recall the 1911 census for 28 year old Thomas May, shows he was living in the Williams household located at house 1, Grove Place, Londonderry. Grove Place, and Carlisle Road are not very far from one another. Go back to the full Google Map for Carlisle Road at: http://tinyurl.com/kjw72dr

In the upper left corner of the page, off the map, you’ll see a prompt labeled “Directions,” highlighted in blue. Click on Directions and an A drop-down box will appear. In the drop-down box type, “Grove Place, Londonderry, United Kingdom," and then click on “Get Directions.” The next map shows that Grove Place is only a 2 minute walk from Carlisle Road. On this map the letter A is pointing to Grove Place. Left-click on the letter A to generate a “Street-view,” then click on the image to enlarge it, and you’ll be dropped off on Grove Place. You’ll see that Grove Place dead-ends into a wall. I believe this wall is part of the famed Londonderry Wall, which at one time surrounded the city. For more information about the Wall, go to the Discover Northern Ireland link at: http://tinyurl.com/kf625jl

These Google Maps show just how close that Thomas May and Margaret McDonald had lived to each other before their marriage in 1912.

Next I found the LDS civil marriage index for John McDonald and Mary Ann Curry. The index shows the marriage was recorded in Templemore, Derry, on 4 August 1864. Templemore was the civil parish in which Londonderry City was located. The marriage index further notes that John’s father was Duncan McDonald and that Mary Ann’s father was George Curry. A copy of the original marriage record can be found on microfilm number 101463, which you can order from the Family History Center. Or you can order the marriage record from the GRO in Roscommon Town:

The present day Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church was not completed until 1878, and so John and Mary Ann would not have been married there. The church had been formerly located in London Street, now the location of the Synod Hall and the Diocesan headquarters of the Church of Ireland.

To read a brief history of the Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church, go to the church website link at:
http://davidsburke.jjbspace.net/crc/historyx.htm

Your McDonalds had likely attended the Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church after its completion in 1879. You can find the Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church by going back to the Google Map at: http://tinyurl.com/kjw72dr

Once at the map, go above the Zoom-in/Zoom-out gage and grab the Peg-man with your mouse and pointed and carry him to the section of the Carlisle Road where it meets the A2 road, also called John St. Let go of the Peg-man there and you should be just about facing the Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church. If you don’t see the church, pan the image until you arrive at it, or make your way to the very bottom of Carlisle Road with your mouse and pointer where it joins John Street, and you’ll eventually see the church, which is constructed with stone.

To see a very impressive YouTube video of the exterior and interior of the Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church, go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQJ0FTgkunk

At the IFHF website I found the civil birth indexes for 9 children of John McDonald and Mary Ann Curry. Some of the children in the IFHF birth indexes are not in the LDS birth indexes, and vice versa. The names and years of birth for the children in the IFHF indexes, including what appear to be a set of twins are: Mary (1865); Elizabeth (1868); Catherine Brown McDonald (1869); Alexander and Matthew (1872); Elizabeth (1874); Alexander (1875); George Duncan (1879); and Margaret (1881).

You’ll notice that Flora McDonald (1866) in the LDS indexes is not in the IFHF indexes. You’ll also see that the IFHF indexes show that Alexander and Matthew were born in 1872, but the LDS index only gives the birth of Matthew in 1872. In addition, Margaret (1881) is not in the LDS indexes.

Both the LDS and IFHF indexes show the births of two daughters named Elizabeth, one born in 1868 and another daughter in 1874. This indicates that the first-born Elizabeth had died. You’ll also see the birth indexes for two sons named Alexander in the IFHF indexes, but none in the LDS indexes. This signifies the first-born Alexander, or the twin, had died.

The IFHF indexes show the births were recorded in the Londonderry Urban No. 1 Registration District (RD). Please see below:

As mentioned earlier the 1911 census shows that John and Mary Ann McDonald had a total of 12 children, but only 8 were still alive in 1911. I next located the baptism indexes for all 12 children at the IFHF website for County Derry. These indexes are the first where I had seen all 12 children together. The children were baptized in the Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church.

The children and their years of baptism are: Mary (1865); Flora (1866); Elizabeth (1868); Catherine Brown (1869); Alexander (1871); Alexander and Matthew (1872); Elizabeth (1874); Alexander (1875); John Brown (1877); George Duncan (1879); and Margaret A. (1881).

In compiling the baptism indexes, I noticed that John and Mary Ann had three sons named Alexander, which means the sons Alexander baptized in 1871 and 1872, would have died.

You’ll also see in the baptism indexes below for Catherine Brown McDonald (1869); and George Duncan McDonald, that “Exact” spelling of their surname is “MacDonald.” When accessing these indexes just select the “Standard Surname Index” option and you’ll be able to use the spelling McDonald for all 12 baptisms:

Margaret A. McDonald, would likely have been baptized in the Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church, built in 1879.

In both the LDS and IFHF indexes you’ll notice the name “Brown,” as the middle names for some of the children. I am wondering if Brown could have been the maiden name of either John or Mary Ann’s mother, or perhaps the surname of a good friend.

I next wanted to see if I could locate death indexes for John and Mary Ann McDonald. I found indexes that may pertain to each. The first index below shows the death of a John McDonald recorded in the Londonderry Registration District for the March quarter of 1913. At the time of death John’s age is listed as 75. John’s age of 75 doesn’t square with his age of 71 in the 1911 census, but his age in the death record may be off by a year or two, whereas I believe his age in both the 1901 and 1911 census returns is correct, as the 1901 census shows he was 61, while in the 1911 census he was 71. In other words, his age didn’t vary from one ten year period to another.

The index is below:

Below is a death index for a Mary Ann McDonald. Her death was recorded in the Londonderry Registration District for the June quarter of 1916. At the time of death her age is listed as 75:

JOHN MCDONALD

The 1901 census gives John McDonald’s age as 61, and birthplace in Scotland, while in the 1911 census he is shown to be 71 years of age, and born in Argyleshire, Scotland. His age in the census returns place his year of birth circa 1840. In both census returns he is shown to have belonged to the Presbyterian Church.

The LDS marriage index for John and Mary Ann Curry states that John’s father was Duncan McDonald. With this information you may be able to find John’s baptism record in Scotland. One website to consider is the pay-as-you-go ScotlandsPeople database. I’ve used this site several times in the past and have found a lot of baptism, birth, and marriage records, but there is no guarantee that you will uncover John McDonald’s baptism.

ScotlandsPeople can be found at: http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

MARY ANN CURRY

The marriage indexes for Mary Ann Curry show that her father was George Curry. In the 1901 census her age is listed as 60, while in the 1911 census her age is 70. This places her year of birth circa 1841. Mary Ann was also a member of the Presbyterian Church. The census returns also show she was born in County Londonderry, or Derry.

With this information I looked for her baptism index at the IFHF website but didn’t find it. It may be she was baptized in a church whose registers have not yet been indexed and transcribed by the IFHF, or the registers for the church she was baptized may no longer exist. The IFHF is adding records to its database all the time, and so you may want to go back to the website periodically to search for Mary Ann’s baptism.

One other consideration is that I missed finding her baptism index at the IFHF website.

ELLEN SARAH STARRETT

Information about Ellen Sarah Starrett that I found in your May Family Tree at Ancestry.com shows that she was born on 11 January 1853 in Ballynian, Boveedy, County Derry, and died in September 1908 in County Derry. Her parents were Hugh Starrett and Jane Hill.

I found Ellen’s baptism index at the IFHF website, but the search engine did not accept Hugh as the first name of her father, but did accept the name Henry. Henry may have been a nickname for Hugh. The search engine did accept Jane Hill as her mother. The index further shows the baptism took place in the Boveedy Presbyterian Church in 1853:

1 match for the search criteria: Starrett Ellen Sarah 1853 Parish: BOVEEDY (PR)

Mother's First Name: Jane

In the 1854 baptism index for Isabella, the IFHF search engine likewise accepted Henry as the child’s father, rather than Hugh:

But, in the baptism indexes for Susan (1856); John (1857); and Daniel (1859); the search engine accepted Hugh as the first name of their father. Their mother in all three indexes is Jane Hill:

I also uncovered the IFHF marriage index for Hugh “Starret” and Jane Hill, showing they were married in the Churchtown Presbyterian Church in 1852. The search engine accepted John as the first name of Hugh’s father:

1 match for the search criteria: Starret Hugh 1852 Parish: CHURCHTOWN (PR)

With Jane Hill as the primary partner in the marriage index, the IFHF search engine accepted Cornelius as the first name of her father:
