27/01/2003 · A 'Nailer' was a maker of NAILS; a common occupation in the industrial north particularly parts of Lancashire. A nailer (or Nailor) used a hearth, a simple form of blacksmiths smithy to forge simple nails, in Lancashire they were called 'duckbils' in his cottage industry home, and often made a lot of money.

Not so sure about nailers making a lot of money; although their employers may have done so. It was a piecework occupation where the homeworker would be provided with a batch of raw material, typically lengths iron rod and, be paid for forging nails of specified size when the batch was returned and assessed for weight and quality. Often this homework was done in very poor conditions by women and children of a family.
