About this project

The Valuation rolls describe the property, name the proprietors and tenants, and contain the annual rental value. Up until 1884 tenants with leases less than one year and a low rental value were omitted. This project spans the years 1857-1899.

The clear images and machine-produced records allow for easy keying. The project difficulty level is set as Average due to the number of records per image.

Title Page

Valuation

This form type is for images which are valuation rolls. The valuations display proprietor name, tenant name, year, and parish.

Year

Key the Year from the top of the image. If a year range is given, key all years. For example, if 1847-8 is the year, key as 1847-1848.

Parish

The Parish can be found at the top of the image following the words "parish". Using the drop-down dictionary provided, key the parish. If a parish does not appear in the dictionary, then key as seen.

Proprietor Prefix

Key any titles before the name, such as "Dr" or "Rev" in the Prefix field. For names such as "The Right Honourable the Earl of Kinnoull" key all as a prefix.

Proprietor Given Name

Using the drop-down list provided, key the Given name of the proprietor which is found in the Proprietor column. If "ditto" or some form of ditto marks (") appear for the proprietor, key the preceding name for the proprietor. If a name does not appear in the drop-down list provided, then key as seen.

Proprietor Surname

Key the Surname of the proprietor using the drop-down list provided. The Surname of the proprietor can be found in the column entitled Proprietor. If a name does not appear in the drop-down list, then key as seen. If a pair of Proprietor/Tenant appears more than once on an image it needs only be keyed once. If more than one Proprietor or Tenant is at a residence, key each as a unique record. If a residence has multiple tenants and proprietors key each coupling of tenant and proprietor as unique records.

Title Page

This form type is for title page images which display the title of the volume and the year. Only the year will be keyed from title images.

Year

Key the Year from the title page. If a Year contains a year range, 1847-1849, key as such: 1847-1849.
