Project Instructions
This collection contains the 1928 Baker Roll, as well as the applications for enrollment and correspondence of the Eastern Cherokee Enrolling Commission. The images are a mix of type-written and hand-written documents.

For this project we are keying from three main form types. The first is the Baker Roll, and this is for any images of final rolls. It includes the Final Roll of the Eastern Bank of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina Under the Act of June 4, 1924 and the Roll of Deceased Eastern Cherokee Annuitants Whose Rights to Enrollment with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina Were Challenged by the Tribal Council. From these rolls we are keying name, gender, birth date and death date.

The second form type is the application. The first page of the application should be marked as "Application Page 1" and any subsequent pages with information to key should be marked as "Application Additional Pages". The application is a typed form, 3-4 pages long, and contains 11 questions. We are only keying information on individuals who are a part of the applicant's immediate family. Immediate family is being defined as:

  • self
  • parents
  • siblings
  • spouse
  • children

We are not keying names of grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins, or any other relation that does not fall in the mentioned categories. Do not key the name from the signature of applicant line or the notary public. If a page of an application does not contain a name of an immediate family member, it should be marked as "Cover page, Section header, etc." The exception to this is the very last page, which contains the date of the application. The last page will end with question 11 and contain a signature and a date. Even if there is no immediate family member on this page it should still be marked as an "Application Additional Pages" and the date should be keyed.

The final form type is the "Examination Interview". We are only keying information on individuals who are a part of the interviewee's immediate family--self, parents, siblings, spouse, and children. For this form we will be keying the date of the interview. It can be found at the beginning of the interview either typed in the header or stamped on the page. Since the end of one interview and the beginning of another can be on the same page, if a date appears for the beginning of the the second interview please create a new section.

There are 20+ pages at the beginning of each Baker Roll that are the Index to Application Numbers and Names in the Baker Roll - these are to be classified as Image with no Data. The first page looks like the image below but subsequent pages do not have the header on the list of names.

Baker Roll

Choose the "Baker Roll" from type if the image contains a list of names with information on their age, gender, birth date, and percentage of Cherokee blood. Some rolls will not contain birth information but rather death information in the remarks column.
