World Archives Project: North Nottinghamshire Register of Voters 1885
About this project This collection includes a register of voters living in Nottingham, UK during the year 1885. Electoral registers are lists of individuals who are eligible to vote during the time the register is in force (usually one year). Registration for voters in England has been required since 1832, and registers were typically published annually, though some years had two. Registers were not published during the latter years of World War 1 (1916–1917) or World War 2 (1940–1944).

This collection is a register of persons entitled to vote for the northern division of Nottingham, United Kingdom for the year 1885. Registers typically provide a name and place of abode, and older registers may include a description of property and qualifications to vote. Registers were compiled at a local level, with local polling districts being combined to form parliamentary constituencies. Names in registers published before 1918 are often arranged alphabetically within the polling district or parish.
For this project we will be keying the name, place of residence, civil parish, and polling district.

Key the Polling District as seen on the image using the dictionary provided to assist you. The polling district can be found at the top of only some images (whereas the Civil Parish is expected on all images) and will be followed by the words "Polling District." See image samples on the wiki for further clarification.
Key the Civil Parish as seen on the image using the dictionary provided to assist you. The Parish is most often found at the top of the page above the list of names or in a short paragraph above the beginning of a list of names following the phrase "within the Parish or Township of ____."
If more than one civil parish appears on an image, create a new section for that parish. If the civil parish has no registrants (if it says NONE under the column headings), do not create a new section for this parish.
Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you.

Key the first name or initial and any middle names as seen on the record using the dictionary provided to assist you. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering the periods.
Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr", "Rev", "Mr" or "Mrs", as seen on the image using the dictionary provided to assist you.
Key the data found on the record in the Place of Abode column in its entirety as seen on the image. For example, if you see “Chillwell”, key “Chillwell” or if you see “3, Church Street, Old Basford” key “3, Church Street, Old Basford.”
If the image does not have column headers, the residence place can be found in the third column from the left, next to the list of names.

Use the “Image with no data” type for images that don’t contain any data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. For instance, an image containing only the blank background or an image with a microfilm target on it.
