Project Instructions
This collection contains census books enumerating Cherokee Indians residing in the communities and counties within the Cherokee Indian Reservation, or Qualla Reservation, in western North Carolina.

Images of the census with names to be keyed should be classified as a "Census Page." From these images we are keying the name, gender and age where available. English names should be keyed into the Given and Surname fields, while Indian names should be keyed into the Indian Name field, even when only an Indian name is given. If an Indian name is given with an English surname, then the Indian name should be keyed into the Given name field.

Images of the census that do not contain any names should be classified as "Continued Image."

If an Indian name appears with an English surname with no other given name, then the Indian name should be keyed into the Given name field. If only an Indian name appears for an individual, with no other English names, then the Indian name should be keyed into the Indian name field.

Age

Key the age at the time the record was recorded. The age will typically appear in an "Age" column.

Gender

Key the gender in its full form, using the dictionary provided to assist you. Gender will be indicated either by an "M" or "F" in a "Sex" column, or with tick marks in an "M" or "F" column.
