About this project This is a collection of New Zealand teachers examinations and licences, 1880-1920.

Project Instructions This collection contains records pertaining to education as a supplement in the New Zealand Gazette. We will be keying the name, residence and publication date.

Things to remember while keying

  • If there are two publication dates, choose the latest of the two.
  • If the initials "B.A" or "M.A" follow a name, do not key them.
  • When ditto marks appear in the residence column, copy the record from above.

Choose the 'List' form type for images with names to key.

Publication Month

Key the month as an abbreviation from the publication date using the dictionary provided for assistance. When present, publication date will typically be located near the top of the image. If there are multiple dates, choose the latest.

Publication Day

Key the day from the publication date as seen on the record. When present, publication date will typically be located near the top of the image. If there are multiple dates, choose the latest.

Publication Year

Key the year from the publication date as seen on the record. When present, publication date will typically be located near the top of the image. If there are multiple dates, choose the latest.

Suffix

Key all titles, such as "Jr" or "III", following the surname of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Do not key the initials "B.A." or "M.A."

Surname

Key the surname as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Name may be found in the column or near the words "Name" or "Candidate." Do not key the initials "B.A." or "M.A."

Given

Key the first name or initial and any middle names of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Initials should be keyed with a space between them and without entering periods. Name may be found in the column or near the words "Name" or "Candidate." Do not key the initials "B.A." or "M.A."

Prefix

Key any titles before the given name, such as "Dr," "Mr," or "Mrs," of the primary person as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Only prefix values should be keyed into the prefix field.

Residence Place

Key the residence place as seen on the record using the dictionary provided for assistance. Separate any geographical locations with a comma. Ex: All Saints, Southampton. Residence place is typically found in the column or by the words "Residence," "Examination Centre" or "Engagement" and often appears directly following the name. When ditto marks appear in the residence column, copy the record from above.

Use the "Cover page, Section header, etc” form type for images that do not contain data, but might be interesting to look at because they provide context for the image set. Example: historical notes, affidavits, etc.

Image with no data



Use the “Image with no data” form type for images that do not contain data or any useful context that might be interesting for someone to look at. Example: An image containing a blank background.
