Extra Keying Helps

Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers

1782 and 1784
  • Not keying as seen, expanding names.
  • Handwriting. Especially the number 8. Frequently dates in the 1780s are mistaken for dates in the 1700s.
  • "same" is frequently keyed as a location (often butchered to Sauce or Lance or whatever). Treat this as a ditto.
  • Key titles following the guidelines (this is almost always 'as seen') - eg. Earl Brooke should not be separated into first name Earl and surname Brooke. It would be entered entirely in given name
  • Wrong date - if there are multiple dates, key the date when the record was entered into the book (almost always the latest date).
  • Key Suffixes as seen - esq is not esqr.
  • Incompleteness. Some are only keying the gamekeepers. Some are only keying the grantors. (we are keying both) and still others are leaving off residence, manors and dates. There is a high probability that the reviewer will send back for rekeying sets with large amounts of data missing.
  • Residence: They are asking for more than just the parish or city. The directions state to separate jurisdictions with a comma. For Example, Allerthorpe, County of York is keyed as "Allerthorpe, York". No adding a -shire to county names when not on the original record either.
  • Crossed out records. Per the Keying Standards, we do key them.
  • Not keying place names as seen - do not 'correct' Birm or Birmm to Birmingham
