Talk:World Archives Project: USHMM - Poland, Lodz Ghetto Register Books, 1939-1944 (Part 2)
From Ancestry.com WikiFeel free to add to or edit information in this discussion tab as necessary. Please take time to become familiar with the General Keying Standards and be sure to read all instructions on the main project page. (Please note that in case of a discrepancy, project level instructions always trump general keying standards.)
Extra Keying Helps
Previous Address: when it says "s. o." it means "siehe oben" translated "see above". If you see that just copy the address from above.
Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers
Errors that I have found on reviewing are:
1. putting hyphens between vorname (first names)
2 not putting the card numbers sequentially but entering as it is on the form, for example if the number before is 10345 and then comes 6 in the line below it should be entered as 10346
3 not using German and Polish diacritical marks
4 putting O before a number in a date, such as O5 for the 5th when it should be written just as 5
5 putting strasse in the street in the header

Question: For the month field, the choices for March are Mai and MÄ?r. Do I use MÄ?r for March? Or do I type März? Nancy 24 July 2014 Answer: Unfortunately, you have to type in Mär and then F7 it. There have been previous requests to Support to change the drop down list but nothing has happened. Patricia 24 July 2014
Q. 1. There are documents in this project that are not register pages but contain a lot of information on names gender, and birthdates. Do I just mark these as Cover pages?
- A: These records should be keyed if you can determine with likelihood that they are lists of survivors/victims.
Q. 2. Are we keying diacritics for this project? I am currently reviewing a set where diacritics have not been keyed. I checked project instructions and it does not say to key them. I had just assumed we do so since every other project has been done that way. -Rebecca 3 May 2014
- A: Yes, we should always key diacritics as they are seen on the record.
Q. 3. There is a discrepancy within project instructions itself and in WAP keying tool field help. In the project instructions at the top of the page right under where it says "Need help keying this project?" in the last paragraph, it says to key "ausg", "ag", "ausg tr" or "wym" all as deportation dates. But all the way down the instruction page where deportation day, deportation month and deportation year instructions are and in the field help of the WAP keying tool, it says to only key the following "ausg", "ag" or "ausg tr" as deportation dates. Wym is not listed in these areas. So do we key wym dates as deportation dates or not? -Rebecca 3 May 2014
A I have not keyed wym. I looked the word up in Google Translate but the translation is "dim". I don't think that is right. I think wym means move to another street. That is not deportation.
In the previous Part 1 of this project, I asked that question and was told by support to key "wym". So I have been doing so. This is the thread from that. I still have 2 questions. Are we keying Kind or not in the Beruf column? When wym is followed by a date and a place name in the Bemerkungen column do we key this as deportation as instructed? It looks like a move to another address and not a deportation. Patricia 1/26/13
1/31/13 I received this reply from Tim at Support: The Wym, while it may appear that they simply moved to a different location, this is a deportation date, so we ask that you key this in as the deportation date. The Beruf column is for profession, which while Kind, or child isn't really a profession, if that is what it has in this column, please key that in. We appreciate your contributions to the World Archives Project.
Q. 4. I have 2 questions re: Previous Address: If it shows "Unbekannt" which means "not known"do I type "Unbekannt" in or leave it empty since it is not really a previous address? - the second question if it shows "geb. in diesem Hause" which means born in this house do I type that in? - kordsp 27 July 2014
A if it says unbekant leave it blank. Geborn in this house leave blank.--Elisabeth power 09:10, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Q. 5. The second image in my set does not have the Block and street name information, there is no place for it to even be written. It is obviously the back of the same page or a continuation of the previous page b/c the numbering of people and apartment numbers continues from the first image. So, do I duplicate the block and street name from the first image or do I leave it blank for the second image? Nancy 28 July 2014
A If it has not Block odr street information leave the field blank.--Elisabeth power 09:10, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Q. 6. If the Card No has a "0" in front e.g. 047748 do we key the number as seen or leave the "0" out and key only "47748"? - kordsp 20 Aug 2014
- A: Do not key the leading 0. The only time we would key a leading zero is if you were keying a two digit year.Annafechter 22:06, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
