Extra Keying Helps

If you are keying Quaker records prior to 1752 the numbering of the months does not follow our typical numbering. Quaker records can be identified by their dates being recorded in this fashion, "23d 5m 1750y". Please refer to the chart below.

Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers

Do not key Jr in given or surname fields. Per keying guidelines: In cases where the name is listed as Rev. John Smith, or John Smith, Jr, and there is not a prefix or suffix field the name should be entered with John in the Given Name field and Smith in the Surname field, without either prefix or suffix. Do not key any ranks that may appear.

Please check that you have keyed the Event City if it appears at the top of the page. Even though the city name may appear only once on the image, if you miss it out of every record on the page, it could have a bad effect on your accuracy stats! --Katerimmer 12:05, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Q: I have some death records that state the death event as between March 23 and April 14, 1816.  The way I have interpreted the instructions is that when there are multiple dates for vital record events (such as marriage, birth, death, etc.) we would then key in two separate records with the individual dates in each record.  With this in mind, I have keyed for the above dates as follows:

1st record: event date as March 23 1816

2nd record: event date as April 14 1816

Both records are for the same person with all other information the same. Is this correct or would I instead only key one record with either the earlier or later date as the actual death date?

Q: I am keying some marriage records and they include the name of the Officiant (i.e.  Rev. John Jones).  Do I key these names as well?

Q: Also, I have a marriage record that says Jane Jones, widow of John Jones, and then goes on with the name of her new husband.  Do I key the deceased husband's name?   If so, what type of event description should I use.

A: I would not key the deceased husband as there is no event date. But others may feel differently. -- Wiedwoman 21:42, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Q: I know we are to put the event city as stated; however I am coming across a lot of cities in other states for the event. I have still just been putting the city. I this correct as I feel it would be difficult to know where they were actually married?

Q: I have a marriage record at the bottom of a page which is incomplete obviously carried over to the next page (which is in the image set I have). How should I handle this? Key all the information as if it appears on the first page?   In this particular case if I key it as 2 incomplete records on 2 pages, it would not make sense or be helpful.

A: Only key the information you see on the page you are working on. Per Keying Guidelines: Unless specifically stated otherwise in the project instructions, information should not be pulled from one image to key on another.[Keying Standards] -- Wiedwoman 22:40, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
