Talk:World Archives Keying Standards
From Ancestry.com Wiki
Regarding Location entries, I think the entry should read:
7. If there is a city and a state or country given on the record but only a general location or residence field, how should I enter it?
Enter the city and <i>state or</i> country separated with a comma. For example, <i>"Denver, Colo" or</i> "Paris, France".

I really would like the keying standards to change to: Key as seen. However, do not use ALL CAPS or periods (full stops).
Where can I find the Keying standards in German language?--<a href="User:Elisabeth power">Elisabeth power</a> 14:56, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
Wildcards in data entry
It seems inaccurate (or at least ambiguous) for the answer to the question "Should I include the ? or * symbols when characters are unrecognizable?" to be "Yes..." when the answer is actually "No, but..." Perhaps the answer could be changed to "No, but you can use two question marks (that is, ??) to represent one or more unrecognizable characters in a word that is otherwise recognizable, such as ??nson when the first few letters of a name are missing due to a ripped page. Use Ctrl+I or the Mark Illegible button instead when all of the data that would be entered in a field is illegible." (We don't want folks keying single question marks or asterisks in what's submitted, and thus, while the use of ?? is clearly explained in the newsletter article announcing the change, the way the answer is currently worded here seems ambiguous at best.)
Keying names with & Co in them.
I could not see anything in the Wiki giving guidance on how to key names that have & Co in them.
John Brown & Co
<p><p>Brown, Smith & Co Brown & Co
Should the & Co be included in the Surname, in the Suffix, or omitted altogether?
I seem to remember that there once was a section that said not to use & Co but key and Co. --<a href="User:Elisabeth power">Elisabeth power</a> 07:05, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
<p><p>A: Unless the project instructions state differently, I believe most projects have called for businesses and companies to be keyed in the GIVEN name field (if keyed at all), and the "&" is spelled out as "and".--<a href="User:Collier smith">Collier Smith</a> 05:28, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
Use of Wildcard ?? in Place of Illegible/Missing Date Numbers
Since we can now enter ?? (two question marks) in place of letters that are unrecognizable, can we also enter ?? in place of date numbers that are unrecognizable eg 18??4 or ??7, so there is some clue for searchers?
