Chowan is a county in North Carolina. It was formed in about 1668 (as Shaftsbury precinct) from the following county/ies: *precinct of Albemarle. Chowan began keeping birth records in 1913, marriage records in 1747, and death records in 1913. It began keeping land records in 1678, probate records in 1694, and court records in 1715. For more information, contact the county at P.O. Box 1030, Edenton 27932-1030. On the attached map, Chowan is located at J2. Record loss, 1848. Records fragmented. * Formed as Shaftsbury Precinct about 1681, it was renamed Chowan about 1681 and declared a county, 1739.
