How do I search?
Provide as much detail as you can
If you know your ancestor’s middle name, or just an initial, this will narrow down your results. Also try to use places and dates wherever possible, even if you have to guess.
Start with the census
The best records to start with are usually our censuses, 1841-1911. Many of you will have grandparents or even parents who were alive in 1911, so try searching for them first.
Filter your results
You’ll often have hundreds of search results. Make these more manageable by narrowing to a particular category on the left. Many categories provide more filter options, such as date ranges.
View the original records
Most search results will offer two options. Click on the record’s name to see the details we’ve copied down. Or select 'View Image' for a scan of the original document.
