To be truly helpful for family history, any map must show the geography and/or political boundaries as they existed when the ancestor you are researching lived there. European countries are broken down into several smaller regions. Many countries maintain vital records on a national level, but for older genealogical records you need to be aware of the regional breakdown. Instead of townships, most European countries are divided into parishes, and it is on the parish level that you will find older birth, death, and marriage records. Once you know your ancestor's parish, town, or village of origin, you can then search for it on a map from the time period. Types of Maps Available
