Telling Stories on Ancestry

Story telling has been a part of family tradition and heritage for millennia. Family history has been passed down orally from the beginning of time. As families gather, the wisdom of ages is passed from one generation to the next through the telling of stories.

Ancestry has created a way for your family to continue this valuable tradition. By using one of our story telling offerings, you will be able to preserve your family's unique history in your own words. You can choose to preserve your stories by recording an audio story or a video story. These stories are saved in your online member tree, which you can share with family members.

So take some time to interview your loved ones. Preserve your recollections. Watch your great-uncle's face as he shares his war stories with you. Ask your Grandma about raising 10 kids on the farm. Catch your toddler's voice as she sings her favorite tune. It is all preserved in your Ancestry family tree for future generations to enjoy.

Recording Your Stories Using Audio

Audio recordings on Ancestry are easier than ever. You can record your story in several ways;

Record by telephone

Simply enter your phone number when prompted. We'll call you. Following the onscreen or phone prompts, you can begin recording your memories about holiday traditions, roller-skating, or anything else you want to share. Your recording will be saved to your Ancestry family tree so you can invite others to listen.

Do you have someone else you would like to talk to as you are recording? Do you want to make sure that your loved one shares his or her story? We can help you here. All you do is choose the "Record with another person" option and enter the other person's phone number. Our service will call you both, and you can ask your questions, carry on a conversation, or sing a duet. It is all up to you. Like the individual recording, these recordings are also stored in your Ancestry family tree.

Record with your computer

Our online recording tool allows you to use a microphone attached to your computer to record your story. The microphone can be attached to a webcam or used by itself. Follow the onscreen prompts and allow our site to detect your microphone. Your story will be added to your Ancestry family tree.

Invite family members to record their stories

You can send loved ones a personalized email invitation with suggested topics you select beforehand. Your email to them will include a toll-free number and a pin code. All they have to do is call the toll-free number, use the pin code and follow the phone prompts. The story they record will be added to your Ancestry family tree.

Recording Your Stories Using Video

Our online video recording tool allows you to use a webcam attached to your computer to record your story. Make sure you have your webcam installed then start your recording. Smile for the camera and tell your family about your teenage years. Sit your father down in front of the camera and ask him about his first car. Have your grandchildren sing your favorite childhood song. It is all preserved for you on your Ancestry family tree.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will you share phone numbers with others?

A: Your phone number, and that of any person you invite, will only be used to connect you to our recording system.

Q: Why do the people I invite via email have to enter a pin number?

A: The pin number is used for two reasons: 1) To provide security against others who might try to abuse the system and 2) To tell us where to save the recording in your family tree.

Q: If I allow you to access my microphone or webcam, what will you do with that access?

A: Your microphone or webcam is only used to record your story. You must grant access each time a story is begun.

Q: Is there a fee associated with this service?

A: No. This is a free service for any registered member of Ancestry who has created a family tree.

Q: Is there a time limit on each story or audio recording?

A: Yes. Each audio or video recording is limited to approximately 12 minutes; however, you may record as many stories as you'd like.

Q: When I want to invite someone to record an audio story with me over the phone, do I need to place the call myself?

A: No. Our service will call both you and the person you invite.

Q: Can I invite more than one person to join me as I record an audio story?

A: No. At this time, we only allow two-way calling — you and one other person you invite.
