Ancestry's new Member Trees

Announcing a vastly improved family tree tool for Online Family Tree users. It is free to use, and provides better hints, better sourcing, automatic record merging, photos, stories, comments, privacy, and more. (Note: Viewing and merging records requires a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk)

How to create a Member Tree from your Online Family Tree

  1. Download your Online Family Tree in GEDCOM format.

    When you download your family tree in GEDCOM format, the information you have in your tree is converted to GEDCOM format, names, relationships, facts, events, sources, notes are all preserved in the process.

    To download your family tree, follow these steps:

    1. Make sure you are on the advanced Online Family Tree page, which will have icons such as , , and in the columns on the right.
    2. Locate the Online Family Tree you wish to download and click on the icon, to the right of the or icons.
    3. The page will refresh and a small clock ( ) will appear, indicating that the file is being prepared for download, which process may take a few moments.
    4. After the file is ready to be downloaded, a new icon, , will display where the icon was before.
    5. Select the icon and choose the destination on your computer to which you would like to save the file.
    6. The file will now be downloaded to the location you specified.

    Note: Guests that you have invited to your tree will need to be re-invited to the Member Tree system in order to view your tree.

  2. Upload the GEDCOM file to the “Member Tree” section.

    Member Trees are accessed on Ancestry.co.uk from the “My Ancestry” section. From there you can start a new tree or upload your GEDCOM file. File imported into the Member Tree system preserve names, relationships, facts, events, sources, and notes. Learn More about uploading a GEDCOM file.

  3. That's it!

    When the file is finished processing you’ll find a link to your Member Tree in the new system, which is a much more powerful tool for researching and organizing, and it is also much smarter when creating and alerting you to possible matching records on Ancestry.
