Italian (northeastern): nickname from zoto ‘lame’ an old Venetian word (compare 4 below). Italian (of Albanian origin): nickname or status name derived from Albanian zot (definite form zoti) ‘lord master (of the house)’. Italianized form of Slovenian Cotič and Croatian Cotić: patronymic from a nickname for a lame person derived from the same Venetian word zoto as Italian name in 2 above (compare also Croatian Cota ).
