English (West Midlands): habitational name from any of various
places, for example Yardley in the West Midlands, Essex,
Northamptonshire, etc., or Yarley in Somerset, named with Old English
gerd, gyrd ‘pole’, ‘stick’ + leah ‘wood’,
‘clearing’. The compound apparently referred to a forest where timber
could be gathered.
