English: habitational name from any of various places called
Worton. Most are named with Old English wyrt ‘plant’,
‘vegetable’ + tun ‘enclosure’, i.e. a kitchen garden, but in
some cases the first element may be Old English worð
‘enclosure’ (see Worth), and in the case of Nether and Over
Worton in Oxfordshire (Hortone in Domesday Book, Orton
in other early sources), it is Old English ora ‘bank’,
‘slope’.
