The Rutland placename and probably derives from Old Norse vengi ‘field’. Chinese: Cantonese form of the surname 榮 see Rong Chinese: possibly from Cantonese form of the Chinese names 榮 (meaning ‘prosperity’) or 永 (meaning ‘forever’) or 穎 (meaning ‘clever’) which were monosyllabic personal names or part of disyllabic personal names of some early Chinese immigrants in the US.
