English (Lancashire and Yorkshire): habitational name from Windhill
in West Yorkshire or Windle in Lancashire, both named from Old English
wind ‘wind’ + hyll ‘hill’, i.e. a mound exposed to
fierce gusts. There is a Windhill in Kent (with the same etymology),
but this does not appear to have contributed significantly to the
modern surname.
