North German: from a personal name composed of the ancient Germanic elements wid(u) ‘wood forest’ + kind ‘child’. The name became famous as that of a Duke of Lower Saxony who was an opponent of Charlemagne and was consequently popular in northern Germany as a personal name in the Middle Ages.
