Finnish (Wäisänen): old variant of Väisänen an old eastern surname based on väisä ‘road sign placed on the ice’ or väisäkkä ‘wily person’ (see Vaisanen ). This variant is virtually extinct in Finland. It is also found in Sweden where it is very rare.
