Japanese: ‘bamboo rice paddy’, also written with characters meaning ‘warrior rice paddy’. The most famous Takeda family was descended from Minamoto Yoshimitsu (1056–1127) and ruled several provinces, most notably Kai (present–day Yamanashi prefecture). Other families, such as Ogasawara, Akiyama, Matsumae, Nishina, and Iwasaki, are of Takeda descent. An alternate pronunciation is Taketa. It is listed in the Shinsen shojiroku.
