English: habitational name from any of various places so called,
especially the city at the mouth of the river Wear. This, like other
places so called in Cumbria, Lancashire, and southern Scotland,
derives its name from Old English sundor ‘separate’ +
land ‘land’; a further example in Northumbria has the same
origin as Sutherland.
