Germanized form of Slovenian Štrbenc and Šterbenc: nickname from a derivative of dialect štrbenkati ‘to tinkle’ or alternatively of obsolete štrb ‘stunted’. In large part Sterbenz is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ).
