English: habitational name from any of the places called with spitel such as Spital-in-the-Street (Lincolnshire) or any of several minor places in northern and Midland counties of England. Americanized form of East German Spittel a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked in an infirmary from Middle High German spital spittel ‘hospital’.
