In the 12th and 13th centuries it is recorded several times as Sintun from an unexplained first element + Old English tūn ‘enclosure settlement’. English (Northumberland): habitational name from one or more places called Sinton including Sinton Green in Grimley and Leigh Sinton in Leigh (both Worcestershire). The placenames derive from Old English sūth in tūne ‘to the south of the village’. Compare Norrington and Sutton . In Kent the name may also sometimes be a variant of Sinden .
