The sequence /seu:/ developed to /sju:/ /su:/ /ʃju:/ and /ʃu:/ in early modern English and with voicing of the intervocalic /k/ as /g/ the name would also sometimes develop to Sugar . nickname from Middle English shokere ‘robber’ (Old English sceācere).
