North German (mainly Schütte): occupational name for an archer from Middle Low German schutten ‘to shoot’. Compare Schuetz . Dutch: variant of Schut a cognate of 1 above. Germanized form of Croatian and Slovenian Šute and probably also of its cognate Šutej (see Shutey ). In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ). The surname Šute has died out in Slovenia.
