Schauer Name Meaning
German (also Austria) and Swiss German: occupational name for an official inspector for example the official overseer of a market from Middle High German schouwer an agent derivative of schouwen ‘to inspect’. This surname is also found in France (Alsace and Lorraine) and in some central European countries e.g. in Czechia where it is more common in a Slavicized form (see 2 below). In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ). Germanized form of Czech and Slovenian Šauer a surname of German origin (see above and Sauer ) or of Slovenian Šaver (see Saver ).
