As a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ) and at least in part also as an Austrian surname it developed from Slovenian žagar ‘sawyer’ (see Zagar compare 2 below). Germanized form of Slovenian and Croatian Žagar ‘sawyer’ (see Zagar compare 1 above). Dutch: habitational name for someone from Schagen North Holland.
