As a metonymic occupational name it may have denoted a fisherman or a seller of fish (see also Ribar Rybak and Rybarczyk ). As a nickname it may have been bestowed on account of some fancied physical resemblance to a fish. The Sorbian surname is found mainly in Germanized forms such as Riebe .
