the Scottish Borders near Roxburgh, probably named with an early
British river name of unknown etymology + Old English ford
‘ford’. There is another place of the same name in North Yorkshire,
named with hryðer ‘cattle’ + Old English ford ‘ford’,
but this does not seem to have contributed to the surname.
